Week 17

Read Aloud
No read aloud this week.

Learning Experience
Although I bogged about the movie Freedom Writers in my last blog, the more we watched, the more I learned from it. Mrs. G was such an amazing teacher who touched the lives of her students in numerous ways. She gave up everything to help these kids who needed it more than anything. She was such an inspiration and I gained a lot of learning experience from watching this film. She taught me not to give up on my students.

Quote Of The Week
"If a child can't learn the way we teach them, maybe we should teach the way they learn."- Ignacio Estrada
There are so many amazing quotes on teaching, and I decided on this one because I feel that it has a lot of meaning behind it. It means to me that if you are teaching something and the kids are either not able to grasp the information, or they don't have momentum to even try to grasp the information you should try teaching them the way that they are able to learn. You have to get to know your students an understand if they are visual, interactive, or whatever type of learner they are. Then you have to learn how to teach them to be an effective teacher. This quote ties in with the movie Freedom Writer because Mrs. G got to know her students and had to learn to teach the way they learn.

Current Event
http://abcnews.go.com/US/tennessee-homecoming-king-nominees-give-crown-teen/story?id=18295338
This current event is about a high school that is known for the support for kids with disabilities that attend the school. When homecoming came around all of the boy nominees all decided that regardless of what the results were that this one kid who had Williams Syndrome would be the winner. He was the type of kid who always made everyone smile and was super friendly. All the nominees were so happy they did this because the winner appreciated the medal and wore i everyday whereas he real winner would just hang it in his room. It was appreciated a lot more and much more deserved. I think this article is an amazing example of what should be done to make everyone at a school feel united, welcome, and happy.

Observations
This week I observed all my classes for the week before the midterm. All the teachers give ending assignments, and cram as much work, test, and study review for the midterm as possible. It is very overwhelming due to the fact that I have so much work to get done in such a short amount of time! I also observed how when teachers assign work that is to be done throughout the marking period, everyone waits until the last second and it becomes stressful!

Reflections
This week I have had an endless amount of work due to midterms. I'm looking foward to when they are over!

Week 16

Read Aloud
This weeks read aloud was Big Cat, Small Cat by Ami Rubinger. I really enjoyed this book because it was very interactive. The kids had to finish the sentence with a rhyming word. Our High School class even enjoyed this book. I think it teaches kids about rhyming, repetition, and opposites.

Learning Experience
This week we watched Freedom Writers. I absolutely loved this movie. It was incredible how much of an impact this teacher had on her students. She completely understood them and thought of many different ways to help get the kids interested in learning. She had some tough parts, but she never gave up. She gave her all into teaching, and I admire this teacher so much and would love to impact my students as much as she did.

Quote Of The Week
"To teach is to learn twice." Written by Joseph Joubert. This quote means to me that no matter how well you know a subject, there is always more to learn. You will never ever stop learning. Even when teaching, one may come across some new information that they too are learning either for the first time, or more in depth.

Current Event
http://gma.yahoo.com/teacher-posted-facebook-photo-students-duct-tape-141840410--abc-news-topstories.html
This article was about a middle school teacher who did something very unprofessional. One of her students were duct taping something and they thought it was funny to put the tapes on their mouths. Soon enough the whole class had tape over their mouths. The teacher took a picture thinking it was funny, then uploaded it to Facebook, and made the caption, This is the only way to get them quiet." I think this is horrible. No matter if the kids thought it was funny. I can't begin to understand what went through this teacher mind to think it was okay to post it on Facebook and write that. It is extremely unprofessional. No teacher should ever do something stupid like this.

Observations
This week I observed my father. He is the hardest working person I know. He used to be a fifth grade teacher. I know from countless people telling me how much of an amazing teacher he is, to me actually coming to his class when I was younger, that he positively impacted so many students lives. Recently he helps me with anything i don't understand. He is always understanding and calm. He explains things in depth and makes sure the concept is learned. He makes connections to real life things that helps you remember the topic. He also helps by making fun activities that easily helps me remember stuff for homework and tests. When I'm older and a teacher, i want to teach the way he did.

Reflections
This week our class presented their projects. They were all very interesting. Everyone's projects were different and well thought out. I was very impressed and enjoyed listening to these.

Week 15

Read Aloud
This week’s read aloud was called Buzzle Billy written by Michael Waite. I really enjoyed this book! I plan on being kindergarten teacher and think that reading this book to the class would be very helpful. It teaches kids that sharing is important, how to make friends and how to play with others. It also has repetition, alliteration, and social development in it. I think this book would be a great book to read to preschoolers to first graders.

Learning Experience
This week we went on a field trip to TCNJ! It was definitely a field trip full of learning experiences. First, the state teacher of the year spoke and I can definitely see why she was chosen! She seems like such an amazing teacher. She loves her job, all the kids, and everything that goes with it. That is very important because if you hate your job, then it would be fun for the kids that you are trying to teach, and it can be ineffective. She seemed like she made every lesson fun and that helped the kids to get into learning. She really did make learning fun. She also said that outside of school she has a whole different persona. As a teacher she is fun, loud and outgoing. However if you were to see her outside of school she said she is shy and would totally blend into her surroundings. So being a teacher may make some people go completely out of the way they actually are, but it helps in the long run. I also went to two lectures on disabilities. Both were very interesting, however surprisingly different. In one we were told about laws on disabilities, and at the other we had a speaker. The speaker as born with no arms, just hands. In other words his hands were attached to his shoulders. I was very impressed by his positive attitude. He really worked hard in his life, learned how to do everything differently. Now he has a good job and he said he is very thankful for his teachers who had to think of ways for him to be able to be in a college prep course. For example one teacher had to think of a way for him to write.

Quote Of The Week
This week’s quote is “Learning is not a spectator sport.” Written by D. Blocher. This quote means to me that if you want to learn, it won’t happen by sitting back and watching. You need to become interactive, and try, in order to pick up new skills and learn new things. People don’t realize what they want to do in life until they learn new thing and see what their interested in. Learning is the base of everything and isn’t effective if you sit back and don’t try.

Current Event
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/11/us/fatally-ill-and-making-herself-the-lesson.html?pagewanted=2&_r=0&ref=education
This current event really stood out to me. It was about a lady who had a profession as a nurse. However, she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer but survived for six years with it where most people don’t survive the first few month of being diagnosed. She knew she was reaching the end, so she called a school of students who wanted to go to school for nursing to have a real study of hospice care for her last few weeks. This lady took teaching into her own hands. She thought that the best way for someone to learn a profession is to get a firsthand look and experience. The students not only took care of her, but also talked to her. She told them everything from her life growing up, to all the details and horrors of this illness. My take on this current event is that the student who got this experience will have an advantage in their field because they had a firsthand look. I think that going out and seeing if you want to do that profession for sure is an important aspect. Also the lady who was ill was a teacher to the kids. She taught then by telling them, and obviously showing them.

Observations
This week I observed one of my teachers. I was not doing my best in one of my classes. I was struggling because it was a ton of work and it involved studying things that we didn’t go over in class and you had to learn it on your own. However, I went to extra help and already I feel like it helped. I have a test coming up soon, and I feel that the extra help will be positive and I am hoping I will get a good grade. I learned that some student may need some extra help on some topics, and if the kids have the option of going to extra help, it can completely change how they do in that class.

Reflections
This week I want to reflect on the new safety precaution rules for our school. The new rules are that the door has to be locked at all times. I think that there are positive and negative things for this. Positively is that is there is a lockdown, the door will already be locked and you won’t have to waste time when you should be hiding and keeping safe. Negatively, if a student is out at the bathroom and there is a lockdown, that student has nowhere to go and has to fend for their self. In any situation there is going to be positive and negative effects, but there always has to be safety precautions to keep everyone safe.

Week 14

Read Aloud
No read aloud this week.

Learning Experience
This week we had a very short week. A lot of groups presented their preschools. I learned that everyone took the project in different perspectives. I made my project as a one floor preschool where others made theirs an entire school, and even a preschool on a farm. Everyone thought very creatively and everyone’s projects were different! I loved learning and seeing how each classmate designed their preschool if they were to design them. Also we learned about the rules, costs, and safety regulations that each person would make for their preschool. It was very interesting.

Quote Of The Week
"Learning is its own great reward" Written by William Hazlitt. This quote means to me that when you learn, the knowledge you gain is your own reward. Learning some things may be difficult, but the end result is always rewarding. Throughout life one will realize that information learned will help in many different things. Everything that is learned can be rewarding.

Current Event
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/04/nyregion/sandy-hook-students-return-to-class-in-new-building.html?ref=education&_r=0

This current event deals with the kids of Sandy Hook Elementary school. They are finally returning to school. Surprisingly the kids were eager to see their friends. Even though they wanted to go back to school they were nervous at the same time. When reading this article I was happy to see that many people volunteered their time o help set up this new school as cheerfully as possibly for these young children as well as the teachers. I think it’s a very thoughtful and helpful thing in order to help the kids get back into school mode, even after a horrible tragedy.

Observations
This week I observed discipline in one of my classes. One kid was acting up and repeatedly doing annoying things after my teacher told him to please stop. This kid refused so my teacher moved his seat. When he continued taking his phone out and talking he received a detention and his phone getting taken away. This showed me that some kids may want to act up and just be rude, but you always have to remain calm but at the same time let the kid know that you are the teacher and discipline them in an effective way.

Reflections
This week was a good short week. I enjoyed learning about everyone’s preschool. I am really looking forward to hearing more and for our TCNJ field trip!!!!

Week 13

Read Aloud
This week the read aloud was A Band of Coyotes, by Mabel Canton Elementary School. This was a unique book because the story and illustrations are all done by students. The books main purpose was to teach about collective nouns. However, this book also taught about rhyming, numbers, and animals. I would use this book in lessons for first grade students.

Learning Experience
This week our class went to the library for a lesson from Mrs. Stout the librarian. She taught us about banned books, and why parents don't want their kids exposed to certain books. Some of the banned books I agreed with, however some I didn't. I learned that there can be many different reasons why books shouldn't be allowed in school, and to always be careful in school reading selections!

Quote Of The Week
"Learning how to learn is life's important skill"- Anonymous. This quote means to me that learning and gaining knowledge doesn't come easily to some people. You have to learn it. In order to learn it you must know how to grasp the knowledge. Therefore you have to learn how to learn, and learning is the most important thing in life.

Current Event
http://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/2012/12/28/577542usschoolsecurity_ap.html

This article deals with school safety. Trained police officers are being discussed and put to use in some schools for the protection of students. Especially after the Connecticut shooting, safety measures should defiantly be taken.

Observations
This week i observed one of my teachers teaching styles. He is always nice and he makes sure every student understands the concept that is being taught. Even when kids start to act up, he is still nice and tells them to settle down. Everyone listened immediately because of the respect everyone has for one of the nicest teachers!

Reflections
This week was short and I had parties in almost all of my classes! I hope break is good for everyone!

Week 12

Read Aloud
This weeks read aloud was Money, Money, Honey Bunny by Marilyn Sadler. This book was a good book to teach kids about saving money. It also tied in with moral development such as responsibility. I think this book was be a good book to read to first graders.

Learning Experience
This week we took notes on moral development. I learned a lot about this subject. I learned the three stages and the ages in which each kid normally reaches them. Something I found interesting was that most people never reach the post conventional stage. This subject is something all teachers should know so that they are aware of how their students think and act at that specific age.

Quote Of The Week
This weeks quote is, "Never mistake knowledge for wisdom. One helps you make a living; the other helps you make a life." Written by Sandra Carey. I agree with this quote because knowledge is not the same thing as wisdom. Knowledge is material that you have learned that, yes, will help you make money and a living. Wisdom helps you make a life by thinking from what you already know.

Current Event
http://www1.whdh.com/news/articles/local/south/12009332665166/teachers-employees-saved-kids-in-shooting/
Out of all of the articles dealing with this horrific shooting in Connecticut, this stood out the most. It has to deal with the braveness and selflessness of the teachers. They put the kids entirely before themselves. In a situation like that, it may be hard to act quickly, and very hard to keep everyone safe but yourself. One teacher hid her kids in cabinets while she was left in the open. When this crazy messed up human being broke the door down he was told by the teacher that her kids were in the gym and in a result she was shot multiple times. I don't think anyone will every understand why this guy had the nerve to slaughter little kids. I cant even begin to imagine what could possibly posses him to do this. It is absolutely horrible.

Observations
This week I went to Thompson Middle School and observed a sixth grade history class. I really enjoyed this teacher and his methods of getting the kids interested. He started off with a short funny video that had to do with the subject, then he explained it while he had all the kids attention. Then he made  graphic organizer but had the kids tell him what to fill in so they they had knowledge of the subject. I think this teacher was nice and fun which results in the kids enjoying his class and wanting to learn.

Reflections
This week was very busy. All my classes are cramming in information to get in another test before the holidays! Cant wait until Christmas break!!!!

Week 11

Read Aloud
This weeks read aloud was Telling Time with Big Mama Cat by Dan Harper. This book was interactive with kids. It helped them learn about time and routines. The grade it would best be taught to is first. The second read aloud was The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. The are any lessons one could tie in with this book. One is to appreciate what you have. This book demonstrated repetition, emotion, love, and relationships. It would most likely be taught to either a first or second grade class.

Learning Experience
This week there were presentations. Jamie and Julie presented on poverty. I learned a lot about kids struggling with money issues and their home and school life. I learned how a teacher is able to help even if it is in small ways. Then Jenna and Becky presented on eating disorders, and i learned about these diseases and how to help people suffering from this illness.

Current Event
http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/college_bound/2012/12/by_listening_to_alumni_about.html
This current event is about how kids who graduated high school were observed. It was then decided to incorporate more life skills into senior year in this particular high school. For example one thing they added was a pilot program to help seniors learn about time- and money-management skill. These programs are hoped to help kids in their future.

Observations
This week I had the opportunity to go to Leonardo Elementary School to observe a fifth grade class. This was my favorite observation so far. The teacher was so nice! She taught me the most out of all the observations that I went on. The kids in the class were learning division and they were excited to continue the lesson. I was so happy to get to observe how she taught because she made learning fun! All the kids knew the topic and wanted to do the activities with it. She did both group and individual work and she was always there to help the kids. She defiantly is a good teacher to observe because she was nice and her learning method was fun and effective.

Reflections
This week we had a guest speaker from Rider University come in. She didn't only talk about Rider, she talked about her own experiences as a teacher. She was very interesting. She also talked about a fun camp that is free and kids can go their to learn more about subjects. I think it would be a fun and effective camp for people if they have to time for it.
