This week Jenna presented the book Today I Feel Silly written by Jamie Lee Curtis. I really liked this book and would defiantly use it when teaching a class. The book focused on emotions and how everyday things can change the way you feel. It helps kids understand that having different feelings is okay. This book would probably be most helpful to read to fourth grade students because the vocabulary in the book was a little big, and also the emotion concept would be most appreciated by kids in that age group.
Learning Experience
This week we didn't have a lot of class time due to the school schedule, however i still managed to learn somethings. For example, in class my group worked on our puppet show that we are going to present to the pre-k children. I am very excited about this. I feel that my group is very prepared because we learned to not wait until the last second to complete everything. My group met outside of school and wrote the script, made sure we had the puppets, and typed up what needed to be typed. In school all my group had to do was highlight everyone's part on their scripts, and then practice! I cant wait to actually present the puppet show because my group is very prepared!

This article has to do with students and cheating. It is becoming a huge problem especially because technology is making it easier to copy and paste or just simply look answers up while taking a test. Teachers are worried because grades are such competition between students that they feel the only way they can succeed is to copy or cheat. Students were asked why they do this and many responded saying that grades are unfair. They thing grades depend on standardized testing and busy work more heavier, then on actually knowing the material in depth which is the way it should be. They think that since its unfair, why not just cheat. Teachers are trying their best to help kids achieve good grades without feeling that they should cheat.
Quote of the Week
This weeks quote is "The biggest enemy to learning is the talking teacher" by John Holt. This is a very important quote because it is extremely true. It is basically saying that no matter how much a kid wants to learn, a teacher who is boring and talks nonstop about one specific subject is not helping the kids learn anything. Kids don't have long attention spans so talking for forever is dong them no good. Kids need interaction and fun learning activities and projects. This way they learn the material in a way they actually want to. Kids get more out of a topic from doing hands on and interactive things, rather then sitting and listening to a lecture.
Observations
This week I went to South to observe a special ed class. I enjoyed watching this class because it wasn't how I expected it to be. It wasn't bad or good from what I thought, just different. We observed the lower functioning students. It amazed me how when the student was lacking one thing, they used something else in different ways then we do. For instance, there was a girl who was legally blind. She was able to use a calculator and give change back to another student. Also, since she cannot use her eyes her hearing is extra keen. If you drop a quarter, the girl would know exactly what you dropped without being told just from the sound of it. In the classroom I observed the modifications that were made for each individual. I learned from this and it helped me get ideas for when I become a teacher!
Reflections
This week I presented my current event. Finally I felt comfortable talking in front of the class. I get more used to it as the time goes on! This week also made me realize that every student is different and some may need modifications for the way they learn. Observing the special ed class gave me good examples of how to help kids with different disabilities learn without becoming frustrated or angry.

Week 5
Read Aloud
This week Kayla presented the book Madeline written
by Ludwig Bemelmans. This is one of my favorite books
I remember clearly reading over and over again in my childhood. I think this
book helps to teach structure and order, rhyming, and bravery. In the end of
the story all of the kids admire Madeline and want to be like her because of
the good qualities she has. It helps kids strive to be the best they can be. I
think this book is appropriate for first to second grade. Reason being, it is a
long book, but the kids will get into it and enjoy it because of the content.
Learning Experience
This week our classes’ topic was special education.
This week impacted my thinking a lot. For example, Haley came in who suffered a
brain tumor and now has many everyday struggles, some you would never even
know. I was unaware of how intelligent she is. Also we had Mrs. Weinstocks
visit our class. She is a special ED teacher a north. She explained o us what it’s
like being teacher and how she loves her job. Another special ED related topic
was the activities we participated in. We did experiments on what it’s like to
have speech impairment, reading disability, hearing disability, mobility disability,
and being on crutches or a wheelchair. All of these experiments actually made
me decide to double major in special education. I’m very thankful that I participated
in these activities because now I know exactly what direction I am going into for
the future.
Current Event
This article is called “Parent Power” a movie
screened across the U.S. It is about the movie, “Won’t Back Down” which premiered
in 2011. It has inspired many parents. This movie is shown at many community
events. The movie is used to enforce local education organizing effects.
Basically this article is about a movie that has inspired many parents of kids who
are educationally involved to step in and fight for what they want. This movie inspired
many people in many different communities.
Quote of the Week
This week’s quote was “I cannot teach anybody. I can
only make them think” by Socrates. Basically this quote means that as a teacher
you are expected to put forth your best effort to help kids learn. However if a
student refuses to learn, it is not your fault. A teacher tries to make
learning fun and have kid’s easily understand subjects, but unfortunately
teachers cannot force kids to learn which is what this quote is saying.
Observations
This week I observed something I do not wish to do
as a teacher. As a teacher you don’t want to confide in young kids about your
problems. Especially teachers should never talk to their students badly about
other students. However sometimes this occurs. Of course since kids tell all,
it always comes back to the students who were talked about. The kids who were
being talked bad about always feel upset and angry. This is something I will
try to never do as a teacher. I want to be friendly and nice to my students,
however I don’t want to treat them like my best friends and confide in them and
talk about other students to them.
Reflections
This week was a very informing and productive week.
I am very grateful for all the special Ed activities we did because now I know
that I want to double major in childhood development and special Ed. I hope to learn
a lot more at the observations for high school special Ed next week! :)

Week 4
Read Aloud
This week Jamie read Mr. Cuckoos Clock Shop written by Arnold Shapiro. I personally liked this book because it helped the kids learn a couple different things. For example, it had a clock where the class had to actually move the hands to the right time. It is interactive which helps the kids learn easier. Also it has rhymes which also is also a good tool to help teach the kids. This book is appropriate for first or second grade. This is because that is the age that kids begin to learn time and his book will help them understand the concept easier.
Learning Experience
This week in the tomorrows teachers class, we did many activities that I learned from. One, was in the beginning of the week, we did a type of test to see which side of the brain we use more. After finding the results out, we then got into groups and made a list of likes and dislikes in school. Surprisingly everyone who was left sided, like me, had very similar likes and dislikes. Another activity well partook in was making list of good and bad qualities of teachers. It was good way to see how not only me, but everyone else views certain teaching styles. It helped me get a better view of what I want to be like as a teacher and the qualities I wish to have, as well as the qualities I don't want to acquire.

This article, written by Leslie A. Maxwell, is about how there is racial discrimination in public schools in the south. It goes into detail how there is a Spanish speaking mother who knows little to no English. The teacher then at conferences has the 7 year old son translate what the teacher says. Even though the child is young, he is slick and told his mom his teacher was saying he was doing great in school when that wasn't the case. Therefore his grades were bad because the school did not provide someone to help translate for the students mother. Now it has become a case because they fell as if there are being discriminated against in the south.
Quote of the Week
"You can never be overdressed or overeducated" -Oscar Wilde
This is a meaningful quote to me because I believe in what it is saying. I think that as a teacher there is no such thing as overdresses. You always have to look good because you are the role model for the kids. For example if a teacher came to school in baggy sweatpants and a big t shirt everyday, the kids would be less likely to listen or pay attention to that teacher. Also there is no such thing as over educated. Everyday there is something new to learn. No matter how much of a genius someone is, education never stops therefore you can never be over educated.
Observation
This week I observed something we went over in the tomorrows teachers class. We went over positive reinforcement and how it should be used as a good thing. In one of my classes I observed how my teacher used this method. We were writing essays on Google docs where it allows the teachers to write comments as you write. She wrote comment such as good job but to make the sentence make more sense do this. She let the writer know that they were on the right track but to make the essay the best t can be to change certain things. This is a good method to use because it doesn't let kids down if they do something wrong, and it also doesn't make kids cocky about their work.
Reflections
This week I went to Harmony to help watch kids during a PTO meeting. I was very excited planning some activities to do with all of the children while I was there. However, when I got there only two kids were present! One kid came into the classroom eager to read books and have fun. There was another little boy who at first seemed shy and didn't want to come. After he was nudged a little by his mom to come, he walked into the room. He got a book and sat by himself. I then went over to him and started to look at the Guinness Book Of World Records with him. He began to warm up to me and we were laughing and having a good time! When the meeting was over he didn't want to leave and even asked if me and Christina could hangout with him sometime! This made me extremely happy because observing him when he first came in he was shy and reluctant, then as I began to talk to him he became more comfortable and enjoyed reading the book with me!
