Week 5

Read Aloud
This week Kayla presented the book Madeline written by Ludwig Bemelmans. This is one of my favorite books I remember clearly reading over and over again in my childhood. I think this book helps to teach structure and order, rhyming, and bravery. In the end of the story all of the kids admire Madeline and want to be like her because of the good qualities she has. It helps kids strive to be the best they can be. I think this book is appropriate for first to second grade. Reason being, it is a long book, but the kids will get into it and enjoy it because of the content.

Learning Experience
This week our classes’ topic was special education. This week impacted my thinking a lot. For example, Haley came in who suffered a brain tumor and now has many everyday struggles, some you would never even know. I was unaware of how intelligent she is. Also we had Mrs. Weinstocks visit our class. She is a special ED teacher a north. She explained o us what it’s like being teacher and how she loves her job. Another special ED related topic was the activities we participated in. We did experiments on what it’s like to have speech impairment, reading disability, hearing disability, mobility disability, and being on crutches or a wheelchair. All of these experiments actually made me decide to double major in special education. I’m very thankful that I participated in these activities because now I know exactly what direction I am going into for the future.

Current Event
This article is called “Parent Power” a movie screened across the U.S. It is about the movie, “Won’t Back Down” which premiered in 2011. It has inspired many parents. This movie is shown at many community events. The movie is used to enforce local education organizing effects. Basically this article is about a movie that has inspired many parents of kids who are educationally involved to step in and fight for what they want. This movie inspired many people in many different communities.

Quote of the Week
This week’s quote was “I cannot teach anybody. I can only make them think” by Socrates. Basically this quote means that as a teacher you are expected to put forth your best effort to help kids learn. However if a student refuses to learn, it is not your fault. A teacher tries to make learning fun and have kid’s easily understand subjects, but unfortunately teachers cannot force kids to learn which is what this quote is saying.

Observations
This week I observed something I do not wish to do as a teacher. As a teacher you don’t want to confide in young kids about your problems. Especially teachers should never talk to their students badly about other students. However sometimes this occurs. Of course since kids tell all, it always comes back to the students who were talked about. The kids who were being talked bad about always feel upset and angry. This is something I will try to never do as a teacher. I want to be friendly and nice to my students, however I don’t want to treat them like my best friends and confide in them and talk about other students to them.

Reflections
This week was a very informing and productive week. I am very grateful for all the special Ed activities we did because now I know that I want to double major in childhood development and special Ed. I hope to learn a lot more at the observations for high school special Ed next week! :)

  1. As a teacher, you always want to build relationships with your students, but there is always a line you never cross. I'm glad you are aware of what it appropriate and what is not. The movie looks great, I want us to watch it as a class. I'm so happy you know that you want to double major in special education. It is something that will be required eventually so you will be ahead of the game. Keep up the good work!
